Next Time You're In A Coma Bring A Book

Next Time You're In A Coma Bring A Book, 2013, Copic markers, watercolors, color pencils, acrylic paints, acrylic and Sumi ink on cardboard, 9 x 12;

This drawing was a happy accident. It started as a test of the cardboard and acrylic ink. I became excited about the way this experiment was headed so I decided to expend on it. I re-used one of my first painting ideas, which was never finished (the boy setting free his pig-shaped balloon on top of a mountain). I was going for a certain “Renaissance feel” in this picture. The general idea is resting in the Latin proverb at the bottom AUDACES FORTUNA IUVAT - Fortune Favors The Bold. The boy is letting go of the idea of luck (pig is a overt reference to that) and is ready to create his own opportunities. 

Other symbols include the pillars, which are the bridge and unification of Heaven and Earth. The tree is the symbol of stability, and life itself.

The purple jacket worn by the mystery man represents the truth and justice. It also alludes to royalty, and is seen in Christianity as a reference to God.

Heart is the symbol of life-essence, intellect, understanding, soul, and love. A center of a human being. The fact that it is checkered however, suggests duality. 

And the mystery figure in the center? I will let you decide that!
