San Francisco, 2010, ink on paper/ink wash, 11 x 14;
Paul Madonna was the idea and inspiration behind this drawing. I was attempting to catch his use of perspective. I also enjoyed his use of ink wash to help set the atmosphere. As a reference I used an old photo of San Francisco I took shortly after arriving to California. I played around with different ideas for the composition and cropping; in the end I decided it was more powerful to leave the edges of the other buildings. Layering the ink wash was the most tedious part. It felt as though I was lacking control while working, so I was stressing the entire time about making a mistake. It turned out fine in the end.
